The Sun Also Cycles

Only in recent years has the scientific community started to admit that we earthlings are directly affected by changes in what happens at the suns surface. And among those communities there are divisions in the research. But most of these scientist are in agreement that we are influenced by the sun, the planets and the universe beyond in ways never before known or even imagined. I included this solar information because the sun is somewhat directly tangible and observable every day as to what is happening "out there". The sun provides light and warmth, no news here. But having at least a basic understanding of the other related effects of the sun upon us can be tell tale of what may be in store for us on earth.

In March of 2008 we entered a new 11 year Solar activity cycle which may have effects on our Electrical Systems as well as human general health. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) recognized the early signs of increased Solar Activity and announced that Solar Cycle 24 had begun. During a Sept 23, 2008 press conference, NASA reported that up to then, "24" was having a less than "normal" cycle of activity. That report from NASA speculated that "24" would start to kick in with more activity in early 2009. This was due to the fact that many more sunspots must emerge before scientists consider the new cycle to be a Solar Maximum cycle, with the potential for more frequent solar storms. As of late-June 2009, "24" has continued to be a dud with NO measurable flare activity since March, 2008. It is beginning to look like we may very well may be in a Solar Minimum cycle at least until now.

NASA and the European Space Agency Ulysses space craft mission to the sun has also revealed that the sun's solar wind speed is at a 50-year low. NASA only started recording solar wind data 50 years ago with the advent of the space age. As stated by NASA, "the sun's current state could result in changing conditions in the solar system", what ever that means. NASA has not expanded on that statement issued in Sept of 2008. Though scientists agree there is no way to predict what "24" may have in store for us. However, we do know the effects of previous Solar Maximum and Solar Minimum Cycles. The next few sections offer insights if you are not familiar how Solar Cycles have a direct effect upon all of us along with other recent discoveries and celestial influences.
